Unsolved Societal Challenges Series--An Introduction
Hello, this is George Bullard, and I am a septuagenarian. When I was in my teens and a college student, I learned a lot about various societal challenges in my country and the world.
As I pondered these challenges through idealist eyes, a youthful belief in the power of religious and social change movements, and as I first read Eric Hoffer’s book, The True Believer as a 17-year-old, I thought . . .
“Surely these challenges will be successfully addressed within the next decade. Certainly, during my lifetime.”
For the most part they have not been. This is very frustrating. Humankind should be better than this!
Recently I made a list of some of these issues. I decided to craft posts about my memory of them from my teen and college years. And my perspective on them now.
It is possible the first one will be posted within a day or two. Be on the lookout for it.
I invite you to offer your perspective in response to these posts. Offering your perspective is different than saying if you agree or disagree with me.
I want to learn from you. It could be you have perspectives on the issues I raise that are different and even enlightening to me and others.
There will be one or more “Comments” links on the posts.
The first post in this series will be on “Opening Religious Exercises, Bible Reading, and Prayer in Public Schools”. I have first person encounters with this societal challenge dating back to 1963. I will detail these in the post later this week.
Watch this space!

OR . . .
I look forward to the series and discussion. Some of the unsolved issues I have seen over my years are: conflict and war; racism and hatred; nationalism and religious freedom; spiritual apathy and ethical relativism; secularism in the western culture. Just a few.
