Seems like northern organizing of Southern Baptist churches started in the 1950’s. I’ll be interested to see if your experience in PA was similar to mine in MI, George.
Born and raised in a Southern Baptist home in MI in 1956. Through the US-2 program I was a BSU director at U-M and Eastern Michigan University (Alma mater). Left in 1983 for SBTS and returned in 1996 to pastor an SB church until end of 2018. My wife and I are both 1st gen MI Southern Baptists.
I was born into a pastor's home in Raleigh, NC in 1950. Moved to Baltimore in 1957. Moved to Philadelphia in 1965. In 1972 my father becamae the executive director of the Penn-South Jersey Baptist Convention. In 1981 (at 31 years old) I designed and led the Mega Focus Cities strategy for the Home Mission Board that took me to all the metros of 1 million or more to strategize for church planting, evangelism, and ministry with Southern Baptists.
George, my parents were just laypeople who migrated from KY. But they were heavily involved in the developing Southern Baptist presence in MI. I remember the Mega Focus strategy. I was in the Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor area at the time. Did your travels include Detroit?
